Recommendations
Traveller recommendations
As in any capital city, avoid carrying valuables visibly in the street.
Practical tips
Bring a form of ID for access to certain sites. Carry cash in quetzales for purchases at the Central Market.
What to pack
Comfortable walking shoes and city clothes, a light backpack, water and sunscreen. The capital sits at 1,500 m and cools down in the evening — bring a warm layer, and binoculars for the morning at the Jardín Botánico.
Frequently asked questions
Is Guatemala City worth a stop?
Most trips begin and end here, since La Aurora is the country's international airport. Two days are enough for the historic centre, the National Palace, the Museo Ixchel and the Jardín Botánico, without adding a leg to the rest of the route.
Is the city safe for visitors?
The areas this route covers — the historic centre and Zones 4, 10 and 13 — are busy every day. As in any capital, keep valuables out of sight in the street, use transport arranged in advance rather than a taxi hailed on the pavement, and avoid walking around after dark.
Can you watch birds in the capital?
Yes. The Jardín Botánico holds a real number of species in the middle of the city, and the wooded ridge of Cerro Alux, on the western edge, is close enough for a half-day. Both exist as birdwatching tours, leaving from Antigua or from the city.
