Frequently asked questions

How do you get around the lake?

The most common and efficient way to travel between the villages is by boat (lancha). While there are public water taxis that run regularly, booking a private boat tour allows you to explore the villages at your own pace without adhering to a strict schedule.

What is the weather like?

Lake Atitlán enjoys an "eternal spring" climate due to its altitude (1,562 meters / 5,125 feet). Days are generally warm and sunny, while evenings and early mornings can be quite chilly. It's best to dress in layers.

Is it safe to swim in the lake?

Swimming is possible, but it highly depends on the location. Some areas near larger towns can have water quality issues. It is best to swim in designated spots, usually accessible by kayak or boat away from the main public docks.

Will I experience altitude sickness?

Most visitors do not experience altitude sickness at lake level. However, if you plan to hike the surrounding volcanoes, you will be reaching higher elevations and should ensure you are properly acclimated.
