Frequently asked questions

What time does the tour start, and why is there only one departure?

The tour begins at 6:00 AM, with a single morning departure rather than the morning/afternoon choice offered on our other tours. Tecpán is about an hour's drive from Antigua each way, so the earlier start makes sure we reach the forest while the birds are most active.

What is the Pink-headed Warbler, and why is this tour built around it?

It's the highlight of this tour: a small warbler with a rose-pink head and breast, found only in a handful of high-elevation pine-oak forests in Guatemala and southern Mexico, nowhere else in the world. Tecpán is one of the more reliable places to find it, alongside other highland specialties like the Blue-throated Motmot and the Garnet-throated Hummingbird.

What should I wear and bring?

Tecpán sits higher and noticeably cooler than Antigua, so bring a warm layer or windbreaker in addition to the usual hat, sunscreen, and water. Comfortable closed walking shoes are enough — the trails themselves are easy.

Do I need to bring my own binoculars?

No. We provide quality binoculars for every participant, as well as a spotting scope shared within the group. You’re welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer using equipment you know.

Is transport to the site included?

Yes — on this tour, round-trip transport from your hotel is included in the price by default, unlike our other tours where it's an optional add-on. Because Tecpán is about an hour from Antigua, we build the ride into the package: pickup 30 minutes before the tour starts, drop-off at the same place afterward. The price shown assumes a hotel in Antigua or its immediate surroundings — if yours is elsewhere, we will message you before the tour to confirm the correct transport arrangement.
